Theatre for Children World Day

Theatre for children and young people world day is being held as an expression of support for children and young people and in recognition of their rights to artistic and cultural enrichment, particularly by means of theatre culture. This is a worldwide event stressing the significant role the theatre can play in the lives of its young audience and creators.

The establishment of the Theatre for Children and Young People World Day was discussed and approved by the 13th World Congress of ASSITEJ – The International Association for Children and Young People – held in Tromso in 1999. After lengthy negotiations, a worldwide acceptable date was chosen and in the fall of 2000, the general secretariat of ASSITEJ declared March 20th as the Theatre for Children and Young People World Day .

In honour of the Theatre for Children and Young People World Day festivals and performances organized for children and young people, as well as by children and young people, are being celebrated throughout the world.

This day was celebrated for the first time on March 20, 2001.
